The 2nd-seeded ’73-’74 Flyers got off to a hot start with four goals in the first period of Game 1, including two from Ross Lonsberry. They won the game 5-1 while only allowing 17 shots on goal. The 7th-seeded ’96-’97 Flyers would win the next three games of the series, though, beginning with a 4-3 win in Game 2. They trailed 3-2 after two periods, but a goal each from John LeClair and Vinny Prospal in the third led them to a 4-3 win. In Game 3, goaltender Ron Hextall posted a 35-save shutout to lead the ’96-’97 Flyers in a 2-0 win. Then, in Game 4, Eric Lindros opened the scoring with just his second point of the series so far early in the third to give the ’96-’97 Flyers a lead. Then, later in the period, Orest Kindrachuk scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game and eventually force overtime.
Trent Klatt played the role of hero when he scored the game-winner 12 and a half minutes into OT to give the ’96-’97 Flyers a commanding 3-1 series lead. The ’73-’74 Flyers fought off elimination in Game 5 as they scored three unanswered goals in the final 13 minutes of the game to win 4-2. Hextall stopped 47 of 51 shots against while three players registered a multi-point game for the ’73-’74 Flyers. Captain Bobby Clarke then led the ’73-’74 Flyers to a 5-2 win in Game 6, forcing a Game 7, with a goal and three assists. Lonsberry also had a solid game with two goals. Game 7 turned out to be no contest as the ’73-’74 Flyers outshot the ’96-’97 Flyers 51-26 on their way to a 5-2 win. Lonsberry, again, helped lead the way as his three points (1G, 2A) led the ’73-’74 Flyers through to the Semifinal.
