The opening game of the series was tied at one heading into the third period. Reggie Leach scored on the PP for the 3rd-seeded ’75-’76 Flyers with about three and a half minutes left. Then, with less than two minutes left, Peter Zezel scored on a 5-on-3 PP for the ’86-’87 Flyers to tie the game at two. The ’86-’87 Flyers remained on the PP after Zezel’s goal and Tim Kerr scored to give the ’86-’87 Flyers a 3-2 lead with a minute and a half left. They held on to that 3-2 lead for a 1-0 series lead. There was a similar ending in Game 2 when the ’75-’76 Flyers led 4-2 with nine plus minutes left, but the ’86-’87 Flyers scored twice in the final five minutes to force an overtime. Almost nine minutes into overtime, defenseman Andre Dupont, or “Moose,” was given a 5-10-a game for checking from behind to shorten the ’75-’76 Flyers’ bench. It wasn’t until 52 seconds into the second overtime when Zezel potted his second goal of the game to give the ’86-’87 Flyers a 5-4 win and a 2-0 series lead. This is where Brian Propp took over. He posted two goals and an assist in Game 3 to lead the ’86-’87 Flyers to a 9-6 win. However, three other players posted three-point nights in Game 3, including defenseman Mark Howe and Rich Tocchet who both registered three assists. Propp then posted three goals and three assists to help wrap up the sweep in a 7-6 win for the ’86-’87 Flyers. Both Howe and Kerr posted four-point efforts to help lead them to the Semifinal.
