The 5th-seeded ’79-’80 Flyers got off to a hot start, obviously, and even forced the 4th-seeded ’84-’85 Flyers to pull starting netminder Pelle Lindbergh. The “LCB Line,” of Reggie Leach, Bobby Clarke and Bill Barber led the ’79-’80 Flyers to a 5-3 win in Game 1 as they all posted a goal and an assist each. Game 2 was tied 5-5 after the first two periods, but then a goal each from Dennis Ververgaert and Paul Holmgren led the ’79-’80 Flyers to a 7-5 win. Then, the ’84-’85 Flyers led 3-2 at the start of the third, but just like in the previous game, the ’79-’80 Flyers scored two unanswered goals in third to win 4-3. Defenseman Mike Busniuk potted the game-winner at the 11:42 mark of the final period. Now trailing 3-0 in the series, the ’84-’85 Flyers, once again, led heading into the third. Clarke scored almost seven minutes into the third to cut the lead to 2-1, but Dave Poulin potted an empty-netter in the final minute to finally get the ’84-’85 Flyers on the board with a 3-1 win. Brian Propp then led the ’84-’85 Flyers to a 5-3 win in Game 5 with a goal and three assists while Lindbergh made 42 saves.
Then, on the back of five goals in the first period, the ’84-’85 Flyers forced a Game 7 with a 5-2 win in Game 6. Todd Bergen and Tim Kerr both posted a goal and an assist to help lead them to the win. Just a minute and 12 seconds into Game 7, defenseman Brad McCrimmon gave the ’84-’85 Flyers an early 1-0 lead. However, Reggie Leach would score twice later in the period to flip it around for the ’79-’80 Flyers, but a PP goal from Ilkka Sinisalo in the final minute of the period, tied it for the ’84-’85 Flyers. Leach scored his third goal of the game a little over six minutes into the second to give the ’79-’80 Flyers their first lead of Game 7 at 3-2. He then potted his fourth of the game six and a half minutes later to take a 4-2 lead. The ’84-’85 Flyers, though, would have the game tied at four by the end of the period with a goal each from Kerr and Derrick Smith. Regulation would end with the teams tied at four. Ron Sutter did not have a point in this series, but he would score the series-clincher for the ’84-’85 Flyers at the 13:18 mark of overtime. The ’84-’85 Flyers are now the fourth team in UNP history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit to win.
