Despite the end result, it was the 6th-seeded ’90-’91 Kings’ offense that really exploded at the start of this series. They took the opening game of the series by a score of 8-1 as Steve Kasper was the only player to score more than once and Luc Robitaille‘s three points were a team-high. Meanwhile, goaltender Kelly Hrudey stopped 47 of 48 shots against. They then opened up a 4-2 lead in the first period and a 6-3 lead in the second period of Game 2, but the 3rd-seeded ’92-’93 Kings chipped away until Wayne Gretzky‘s goal late in the third won it for them 7-6. The ’90-’91 Kings won Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead with three unanswered goals in the third period. Both Tomas Sandstrom and Todd Elik scored twice as the ’90-’91 Kings won 8-5. The ’92-’93 Kings tied the series up with a 6-4 win in Game 4 after scoring four times in the first period. Robitaille shined for the ’92-’93 Kings in the win with two goals and three assists.
Game 5 was tied 2-2 at the start of the third, but with about a minute and a half left, Mike Donnelly slammed home a rebound to give the ’92-’93 Kings a late 3-2 lead. Then, with 51 seconds remaining in the third, defenseman Marty McSorley was called for hooking and sent the ’90-’91 Kings to the PP. They pulled Hrudey for a 6-on-4 PP and Robitaille tied the game with just 32 seconds left to force overtime. However, Donnelly won it for the ’92-’93 Kings a little over 13 minutes into OT to take a 3-2 series lead. In Game 6, two late PP goals in the second period for the ’90-’91 Kings had the game tied 5-5 heading into the third period. Defenseman Paul Coffey scored the lone goal of that final period with a little over six minutes left to give the ’92-’93 Kings an eventual 6-5 win and clinch the series.
