2nd-seeded ’84-’85 Oilers Sweep 4th-seeded ’87-’88 Oilers to Clinch First UNP Appearance

First off, here is the entire tournament bracket!

Thanks to five goals in the first period, the 2nd-seeded ’84-’85 Oilers won Game 1 by a score of 7-5. Mark Messier netted a hat trick on both the ’84-’85 Oilers and the 4th-seeded ’87-’88 Oilers in the game, but Mike Krushelnyski‘s two goals and two assists were a game-high in the win. Then, defenseman Paul Coffey posted a goal and three assists to lead the ’84-’85 Oilers to a 7-4 win in Game 2. Meanwhile, defenseman Steve Smith tallied three assists in the loss for the ’87-’88 Oilers. Heading into the third period of Game 3, the ’84-’85 Oilers held a 7-3 lead. However, by the 5:32 mark of the third period, the ’87-’88 Oilers cut it down to a one-goal lead with three goals, including two PP markers. The ’84-’85 Oilers scored twice in a three minute span towards the middle of the period to increase their lead, again, and they held on for a 9-7 win. The ’84-’85 Oilers completed the sweep with a 7-5 win in Game 4. Coffey, Gretzky and Messier all posted three-point games in Game 4 for ’84-’85 Oilers.
