The ’73-’74 Boston Bruins were the 4th seed in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff and obviously, received a First Round bye. They actually did not even lose a game in this tournament until the Semifinal Round. They swept the 36th-seeded ’12-’13 Columbus Blue Jackets in the Second Round, then the 20th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars in the Third Round and then the 5th-seeded ’83-’84 Edmonton Oilers in the Quarterfinal Round. Their incredible run came to an end in the Semifinal when they were eliminated by the eventual champions, the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens, in five games.
Players to Watch:
- C – Phil Esposito – He is a legend for a reason. He was a prominent player for three teams in this tournament.
- RW/D – Dit Clapper – Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1947, Aubrey “Dit” Clapper is just one of many “forgotten” legends because they played so long ago.
- D – Bobby Orr – Another legend to wear the Boston “B.” His style of play was a game-changer in the ’60s and ’70s.
