The ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens were the top seed in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff and are the inaugural UNP Champions! After having a First Round Bye, the ’76-’77 Canadiens proceeded to sweep the 33rd-seeded ’83-’84 Quebec Nordiques in the Second Round and then the 16th-seeded ’03-’04 Tampa Bay Lightning in the Third Round. In the Quarterfinal Round, they defeated the 9th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers in seven games, which would be their longest series in the tournament. In the Semifinal Round, they dispatched the 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins in five games. Then, they clinched the tournament by defeating the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames in five games in the Final.
