The 28th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks, just like in last years inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff, have defeated a Thrashers team in the First Round. This time it was the 37th-seeded ’05-’06 Atlanta Thrashers and this time it was a sweep. However, it was a tight four-game series as the first three games were all decided by two goals and then Game 4 was a one-goal game.

The Sharks have some dangerous weapons on offense and Dany Heatley led the way. He led them in goals with four and in points with eight. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau both scored three times to finish tied for second. Defenseman Rob Blake, along with Joe Pavelski, led the Sharks in assists with five, while three players were tied for second with four, including Heatley and Thornton. The two Joe’s were tied for second in scoring with seven points behind Heatley. The defensive pairing of Blake and Dan Boyle was stellar in the series as they were the top two in plus/minus by far with +10 and +9, respectively. Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov had a pretty good series. He posted a 2.50 goals against average with a .923 save percentage. He posted 30+ saves three times and his highest for a single game was 34.

The Thrashers actually showed a little more offensive depth than the Sharks. 13 different players registered a point for Atlanta. Not surprisingly, Ilya Kovalchuk led them in goals with three, but what was surprising was that Colin Stuart was second with two. They were the only two Thrasher with more than one goal in the series. Rich Peverley led them in apples with four, which accounted for all four of his points in the series. Bryan Little‘s three assists made him second behind Peverley. Kovy, Richie and Little were all tied for the team lead in points with four while five players were tied for second with two, including Slava Kozlov. The defensive duo of Garnet Exelby and Nathan Oystrick were tied for the team lead in plus/minus with +4 while Stuart and Jason Williams were tied for second at +2. Goaltender Kari Lehtonen was arguably Atlanta’s best player in the series, despite his 4.00 goals against average. He faced an average of 45.5 shots on goal per game and finished with a .912 save percentage. He made a series-high 51 saves in the Thrasher’s loss in Game 2.
