Hawerchuk Puts On a Show as 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Jets Defeat 34th-seeded ’84-’85 Nordiques in Five Games

This was a high-scoring five game series as the two teams combined for 55 goals. The 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets finished off the 34th-seeded ’84-’85 Quebec Nordiques. By the way, during the ’84-’85 regular season, these two teams played three times with each team winning a game in regulation before the Jets took the third and final meeting in overtime.

As the title says, Dale Hawerchuk was an offensive machine in this series. He scored 12 times, led the team, and tallied six assists, tied for third on team, for 18 points, led the team, in the five games. He scored four times in the series-deciding Game 5. Doug Smail was second in goals for the Jets with just four, a third of how many Hawerchuk scored. Paul MacLean led the Jets in assists with nine and it didn’t hurt playing on the same line as a guy who scored 12 times. Defenseman Dave Babych finished second in assists with eight. Behind Hawerchuk, MacLean finished second in overall scoring with 12 points with Babych in third with 10. There was a four-way tie for the team-high in plus/minutes at +7, including both MacLean and Smail, while Hawerchuk was second at +6. Those five players were actually the only five players to finish with a positive plus/minus. With the amount of goals scored in just five games, it was not a good series for goalies. Starter Brian Hayward finished the series with a 4.20 goals against average and a .890 save percentage. Yikes, but he still won four games and posted the best numbers of any goalie in this series.

The Nordiques didn’t have a bad series…….offensively, after all they scored 25 times in five games. At first and second in goal-scoring for Quebec, to nobody’s surprise, were two Stastny brothers. Anton Stastny finished with a team-high six goals while Peter Stastny‘s five goals were good for second. Defenseman Bruce Bell had a very good series……offensively, as he led the Nordiques in assists with eight while (Peter) Stastny was second with seven. Peter finished with 12 points in the series, which was a team-high, as Bell’s 10 points were good enough for second. Peter also finished tied for first in plus/minus at +5 with winger Michel Goulet while Anton was second at +2. In net, Mario Gosselin struggled in his five starts and was pulled twice. He finished the series with a 4.80 goals against average and a .867 save percentage.

The ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets advance to the Second Round after last year’s representative (’85-’86 Jets) blew a 3-1 series lead and was upset in the First Round by the 34th-seeded ’10-’11 Nashville Predators. The ’84-’85 Nordiques could not repeat what last year’s representatives (’83-’84 Nordiques) did, but they had a much tougher opponent than last year, the 32nd-seeded ’37-’38 New York Americans. The ’84-’85 Jets now advance to play the 2nd-seeded ’44-’45 Toronto Maple Leafs in the Second Round!

Up next in the First Round are the 30th-seeded ’85-’86 Hartford Whalers and the 35th-seeded ’08-’09 Minnesota Wild!
