After arguably being the better team in their First Round matchup in the inaugural tournament, the ’85-’86 Hartford Whalers were the better team, again, but this time they finished what they started. The ’08-’09 Minnesota Wild couldn’t match the Whalers’ offense and needed a change of goalies in the five game series.
Ron Francis was the best player in this series and he led the Whalers in goals with five while Sylvain Turgeon and Dean Evason were tied for second with three. There was a three-way tie for the team lead in assists with with four, which included both Francis and Evason. Francis’ nine points led the Whalers in overall scoring while Evason was second with seven. Defenseman Dave Babych posted a team-high +6 rating while there were four players tied for second at +5, including fellow defensemen Joel Quenneville. Goaltender Mike Liut didn’t have a good start to this series, allowing five goals in Game 1, but he allowed just seven goals over the next four games. He finished with the series with a 2.40 goals against average and a .934 save percentage.
As I just said at the end of the last paragraph, the Wild struggled to score after putting up five goals in the opening game. Only eight players scored a goal for Minnesota and only one of them scored more than one goal. Andrew Brunette was that player and he scored five goals, which were the only points he registered in the series. Longtime captain Mikko Koivu led them in assists with four in the series while four players were tied for second in assists with two, including Owen Nolan and Marian Gaborik. Brunette and Koivu both finished with five points to co-lead the Wild while both Nolan and Pierre-Marc Bouchard finished tied for second with three points. Minnesota did not have a player finish with a positive plus/minus rating and had only three players finish at even, including Nolan and Derek Boogaard. I said earlier that the Wild needed a goalie change and it happened after Game 3. Niklas Backstrom started the first three games and posted a 5.00 goals against average and a .803 save percentage. Backup Josh Harding was called in to action twice in the first two games before starting Game’s 4 and 5. In that time, he posted a 1.50 goals against average and a .941 save percentage.
