The top line for the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche were a major force as they sweep the 18th-seeded ’10-’11 Tampa Bay Lightning. Meanwhile, they’re play on the back end was not very good at all as Tampa exerted some offensive firepower, as well.

It was Milan Hejduk who led the Avs in goal scoring during the four games with seven total, including four in Game 4. Longtime captain Joe Sakic was second behind Hejduk with five goals, but did finish atop the Colorado leaderboard in assists with seven. The third player on the dominant top line for the Avs, Alex Tanguay, was second behind Sakic in assists with six. Hejduk and Sakic both totaled 12 points in the series to finish tied for the team lead while Tanguay’s eight points had him finish in second. Those three also posted the highest plus/minus ratings on the team. Hejduk and Sakic finished at +8 and Tanguay finished at +7. As I said earlier, the offense was not an issue for the Avs, but the defense and goaltending were. They gave up 34 shots on goal per game and allowed almost four goals per game. Which means, goaltender Patrick Roy‘s numbers were not good. He finished with a 3.50 goals against average and a .889 save percentage. Those will have to get better if they are to move further in the tournament.

Much like the Avalanche, the Lightning’s top players had some good offensive performances in this series. Steven Stamkos scored a team-high five goals during the series while Martin St. Louis, Vincent Lecavalier and Simon Gagne all were tied for second with two. Marty was dishing apples like it was his job in this series as he totaled eight in the four games. Teddy Purcell and defenseman Victor Hedman both tallied three assists to finish second behind MSL, whose 10 total points finished as a team-high. Stammer finished with seven points in the series to finish second. Defenseman Brett Clark was a +3 in the series, which made him just one of two Lightning players to finish with in the positives. The other was, of course, St. Louis as he finished with a +1 in the series. In goal, Dwayne Roloson may have lost this series and allowed more goals than his counterpart, but had a better series. He finished the four games with a 5.00 goals against average, but a .902 save percentage as he faced almost 56 shots on goal per game.

The Colorado Avalanche series has had a First Round Bye in both Ultimate NHL Playoffs and for the second time, they have advanced from the Second Round. Last year, the 12th-seeded ’95-’96 Avs needed to come back from a 3-2 series deficit to win in seven games. This year, though, the ’00-’01 are the 15th seed and sweep their opponents to reach the Third Round. Meanwhile, the ’10-’11 Lightning end their first appearance  in the UNP after two rounds. After last year’s representative, the ’03-’04 Lightning, had a First Round Bye and came back from a 3-0 series deficit in the Second Round before losing in the Thurd Round. The ’00-’01 Avalanche now advance to the Third Round and they will face either the 2nd-seeded ’44-’45 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets!

Up next in the Second Round are the 10th-seeded ’00-’01 New Jersey Devils and one of last year’s semifinalists, the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres!
