The reigning runners up are done!!!! The 16th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars have defeated the 17th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames in six games and are only the second team to beat the ’88-’89 Flames in Ultimate NHL Playoff history.

It was a well-balanced attack that led the Stars in this series. Both defenseman Darryl Sydor and Mike Modano scored four goals to lead the Stars. Scott Young was second on the team with three and only one other player scored more than one goal, but six players all finished with one goal. Brenden Morrow was dishing out apples. He led Dallas with seven assists in the series while defenseman Sergei Zubov‘s five were good for second. Morrow also scored a goal to finish with a team-high eight points while Sydor finished second behind him with seven points. Overall, ten players scored for the Stars and 13 players registered a point. Sydor and fellow defenseman Philippe Boucher were tied for the team lead in plus/minus at +8 while Morrow was second at +5. Goaltender Marty Turco faced an incredibly tough test in this series and finished with a 2.50 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. Together with the very good defense in front of him, Turco was able to stiffen the high-powered Flames attack.

Joe Nieuwendyk continued his incredible performance in this tournament with seven goals in this series to lead Calgary in goal scoring. Joe Mullen was second behind him with four. Defenseman Al MacInnis also continued his stellar play with a series-high nine assists while his defense partner, Gary Suter, was second behind him with five. Al and Joe finished first and second in overall scoring for the Flames in the six games with nine and eight points, respectively. Defenseman Dana Murzyn posted the highest plus/minus rating for Calgary with a +3 in the series while winger Brian MacLellan was second at +2. Goaltender Mike Vernon struggled in this series against Dallas and posted a 3.17 goals against average and a .896 save percentage in the six games. Ultimately, the ’88-’89 Flames were doused by a stifling defense and their offensive depth was not good enough.

STARS OF THE GAME:

The ’02-’03 Dallas Stars with a statement win in this series. They did not have a First Round Bye last year and made it to the Third Round, but this year they take the by and then eliminate a damn good team to make it back to the Third Round. Meanwhile, the ’88-’89 Calgary Flames are done way before expected. After losing in the Final last year, they’re done after just two rounds this year. It’s not gonna get any easier for the ’02-’03 Stars now as they will either face the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens or the 33rd-seeded ’06-’07 Nashville Predators in the Third Round.

Up next in the Second Round are the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings and the 30th-seeded ’85-’85 Hartford Whalers!
