High-Powered Top Line Leads 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Jets In Upset of 2nd-seeded ’44-’45 Maple Leafs in Six Games

The top line of Mullen-Hawerchuk-MacLean were dominant yet again for the 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets. This time they were able to lead the Jets over the 2nd-seeded ’44-’45 Toronto Maple Leafs as the Leafs franchise is now 0-2 in Ultimate NHL Playoff history.

Ted Kennedy was at the center of Toronto’s offense in more ways than one in the six games. He centers the top line and led the Leafs in goals, assists and points. Kennedy scored four times while wingers Lorne Carr and Nick Metz were second in goals with three. Carr was also second in assists with four while Kennedy tallied eight apples. It was the same two who were first and second in points as Kennedy’s 12 points were first and Carr’s seven were second. Only three players finished with a plus/minus rating that was not in the negatives as Art Jackson and defensemen Moe Morris and Wally Stanowski all finished with even plus/minus ratings. Frank McCool was in net for all six games for “Tronna” and he wasn’t all that successful as he posted a 5.17 goals against average and a .888 save percentage.

Brian Mullen was the Jets’ leading goal scorer in the series as he tickled the twine eight times while linemate Dale Hawerchuk scored six goals to finish second. Hawerchuk posted a series-high 11 assists while the final player on that top line, Paul MacLean, was second with nine assists. Hawerchuk also led Winnipeg in overall scoring as he finished with 17 points while Mullen finished with 15. Together with MacLean, the three combined for 45 points in the six games. The Jets had some players with very impressive plus/minus ratings and it was Mullen who was at the top of that list with a +15 rating. Meanwhile, MacLean and Hawerchuk were tied for second at +11 with defenseman Robert Picard. Goaltender Brian Hayward had a pretty good series in net, at least in terms of save percentage. His 3.00 goals against average isn’t all that good, but his .923 save percentage is. He also posted back-to-back shutouts in the series: a 47-save shutout in Game 3 and a 29-save shutout in Game 4, both 5-0 wins.

The ’84-’85 Jets continue to advance behind that high-powered top line. Last year, they were eliminated in the First Round, but here in the second UNP, they are moving on to the Third Round now with a record of 8-2-1. The Toronto Maple Leaf franchise has been the 2nd seed in both of the Ultimate NHL Playoffs, but have now been eliminated in the Second Round twice. The franchise with the second-most Stanley Cups have not won a series in UNP play. Next up in the Third Round, the ’84-’85 Jets will face off against a very good ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche team, who are the 15th seed and swept the 18th-seeded ’10-’11 Tampa Bay Lightning!

Up next in the Second Round are the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers and the 26th-seeded ’05-’06 Ottawa Senators!
