4th-seeded ’73-’74 Bruins Completely Dominate 36th-seeded ’13-’14 Blue Jackets in Five Game Series

This one wasn’t even close. It lasted five games, but the 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins shutout the 36th-seeded ’13-’14 Columbus Blue Jackets three times and outscored them 20-4 in the five games.

This Bruins team was loaded with talent and two of their best lead them in goals in Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge who both finished with four goals. Meanwhile defenseman Bobby Orr and Terry O’Reilly were tied for second with three. Wayne Cashman led them in assists with a series-high eight in the five games while Espo was second with six apples. That meant Espo finished with 10 points, which was a team- and series-high. Cashman and Orr were tied for second with eight points. Cashman, who won the inaugural UNP Selke Trophy in last years tournament, also led the Bruins in plus/minus at +10. There was a four-way tie for second at +7, including Espo, Orr, Hodge and defenseman Carol Vadnais. As I stated at the beginning of the post, the Bruins shut out the Jackets three times in the series and that contributed hugely to goaltender Gilles Gilbert‘s incredible 0.80 goals against average to go along with his steller 0.971 save percentage. His performance in this series is gonna put him at the forefront of the UNP Vezina Trophy.

This was a dreadful series for Lumbus. They only scored four goals in the five games and Matt Calvert accounted for two of them. Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Johansen scored a goal apiece. Dubinsky did lead the Blue Jackets in assists with three while defenseman David Savard was second with two. Those four mentioned players were the only players to register a point in the series and Dubinsky led them with four points while the other three all finished with two points. The plus/minus ratings were not good for the Blue Jackets, but three players, who appeared in all five games, did finish with even ratings: defensemen Dalton Prout and Ryan Murray and center Mark Letestu. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was incredible in Columbus’ First Round matchup, but he had just too much talent to go up against in this series. He posted a 4.00 goals against average and a .903 save percentage over the five games.

The ’73-’74 Bruins, who made it to the Semifinals last year, look primed for another deep run here after completely dominating the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets here. This was a good tournament for the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets did make it to the Second Round yet again. Next up in the Third Round, the ’73-’74 Bruins will take on either the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings or the 20th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim!

Up next in the Second Round are the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings and the 20th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim!
