The top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens have a lot to live up to after last year’ representative won the whole thing, but they’ve started their debut tourney with a sweep! It wasn’t quite the domination like from last year’s rep, but a win is a win!

There’s a lot of carry over from last year’s champion on this team and those same leaders are at it again. Legends Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt led Les Habs in goals with three apiece. There was a three-way tie for second with two goals, including defenseman Larry Robinson and newcomer to the UNP, Pierre Mondou. Distribution is where Lafleur shined brightest in this series as he led Montreal with nine assists. Robinson was tied with his fellow defenseman Guy Lapointe for second with five helpers. Lafleur and Robinson then finished first and second in overall scoring with 12 and seven points, respectively. Robinson posted a team-high +6 plus minus rating while Lafleur was tied for second with fellow legend Jacques Lemaire at +4. Yet another legend mined the goal for the Habs. Ken Dryden posted okay numbers as he finished 4-0-0 with a 2.50 goals against average and a .911 save percentage.

Let’s be honest, the ’06-’07 Preds didn’t stand a chance, but they did force a double overtime game in Game 1 and there was only one blowout. Scott Hartnell was Nashville’s leading goal-scorer in the series with three while Paul Kariya, David Legwand and Steve Sullivan were all tied for second with two. Kariya was then tied with defenseman Ryan Suter for the team lead in apples with three. There was a four-way tie for second in assists at two, including Kimmo Timonen and Jason Arnott. The Predators’ overall scoring leaderboard was not as congested in the top two spots as Kariya was alone at the top with five points while Legwand was second with four. Kariya also led the Preds in plus/minus with an even plus/minus rating in the four games while Legwand was tied for second with Hartnell and defenseman Shea Weber for second at -1. Goaltender Tomas Vokoun wasn’t necessarily bad, but he wasn’t good. He was pulled once in this series and finished with a 0-3-1 record to go with a 3.50 goals against average and a .907 save percentage.

Well, the ’78-’79 Canadiens are following up last year’s representative who won the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff and they’re starting their run with a good start. For Nashville, not necessarily a bad tournament, but last year’s representative did make it to the Third Round before being eliminated. The ’78-’79 Canadiens will now face the 16th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars in the Third Round, who upset the reigning runners up, the 17th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames, in the Second Round!

Up next in the Second Round are the 8th-seeded ’81-’82 New York Islanders and the 25th-seeded ’83-’84 Washington Capitals!
