27th-seeded ’82-’83 North Stars Force Seven Games, but 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Oilers Too Much in Game 7

This was not a good series if you were a goaltender. The two teams combined for 75 goals over the course of the seven games. The 27th-seeded ’82-’83 Minnesota North Stars caused more of a problem than I would’ve though and even led in this series after three games. However, the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers were too much in the end and controlled Game 7.

When you think back to the Oilers dynasty, it’s hard to think about what stars they had on the team because they played such a sound team, defensive game……Yeah, not really. Wayne Gretzky led Edmonton in goal scoring in the series with 11 while Glenn Anderson was second behind him with five. 10 different players scored for the Oilers in the series and nine of them scored multiple goals. Defenseman Paul Coffey was a distributing machine in this series as he finished with 19 assists in the seven games. Meanwhile, Jari Kurri also had a stellar series in the play-making department with 12 assists. Together with four goals, Coffey finished with a total of 23 points to lead the Oilers while Gretzky was second with 18 points. Coffey was also tied with fellow defenseman Don Jackson for the team lead in plus/minus at +5. Anderson was part of a three-way tie for second at +2 that included Gord Sherven and Jaroslav Pouzar. As I said earlier, this was not a good series for the goaltenders and you can notice that when the goaltender on the winning team finishes with a 4.43 goals against average and a .879 save percentage. That was Grant Fuhr‘s final line, but he did win four games and that is all you ask of a goaltender in a seven-game series.

The North Stars showed themselves well in this series, mostly offensively, though. Dino Ciccarelli lead them offensively and he was tied with Willi Plett for the team lead in goals with six. Brian Bellows and Tom McCarthy were tied for second with four goals apiece. Nine players scored multiple goals in the series for Minnesota. Defenseman Craig Hartsburg was the North Stars’ top play maker in this series with nine assists while Dino was second with seven. Dino finished atop the overall scoring leaderboard with 13 points in the seven games with Hartsburg in second with ten points. Those two were just two of six players for Minnesota to average a point per game in the series. Goaltender Gilles Meloche was pulled twice in this series and his final numbers say he should’ve been pulled more. He posted a 5.00 goals against average and a .880 save percentage.

The ’84-’85 Oilers were in for more of a battle than I was expecting. However, they move on in the end and will try to at least match last year’s representative, who made it to the Quarterfinal. For the ’82-’83 North Stars, they match last year’s representative, but fared much better in this Second Round after last year’s rep was swept. The ’84-’85 Oilers will face off against the winner of our next series in the Third Round!

Next, to finish the Second Round, the 11th-seeded ’95-’96 Pittsburgh Penguins take on the 22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Vancouver Canucks!!
