22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Canucks Blow 3-1 Series Lead, but Hold on in Seven Games to Upset 11th-seeded ’95-’96 Penguins

There were some blow outs early on in this series, but the games got tighter and tighter the longer the series went. The 11th-seeded ’95-’96 Pittsburgh Penguins needed some better goaltending late in the series, which they got, to force a Game 7, but the 22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Vancouver Canucks deservedly hold on for the series win.

The high-powered attack you might expect from this Penguins team didn’t show up after the first couple games. Only seven players scored a goal and only four scored more than once. Jaromir Jagr led them in goal scoring with six goals while Ron Francis was right behind him in second with five. Mario Lemieux, in his first Ultimate NHL Playoff appearance, co-led the Penguins in assists with six with defenseman Dmitri Mironov. Jagr finished second in assists with four, but along with his six goals made him Pittsburgh’s overall scoring leader with 10 points. Lemieux finished with nine points to finish second behind Jagr. Defenseman Sergei Zubov posted a team-high +3 plus/minus rating while Francis was second-best with a +2 rating. Goaltender Tom Barrasso was playing at a level where he could’ve been removed as the starter early on in this series. He faced more shots than his counterpart and finished the series with a 3-4-0 record to go along with a 3.14 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. To put it in perspective, his save percentage was well below .900 after the first three games of this series.

The Canucks had a balanced offensive attack to go along with some good defensive play and solid goaltending, as always. Ryan Kesler and Daniel Sedin were tied for the team lead in goals with four apiece. Meanwhile the other twin, Henrik Sedin, was tied with Mikael Samuelsson for second in goals with three. The Sedins, to no one’s surprise, were first and second in assists in this series. Henrik tallied nine assists while Daniel had six assists. And, again, to nobody’s surprise, those two were first and second in overall scoring for Vancouver. Henrik totaled 12 points while Daniel totaled 10 points. Daniel also led Vancouver in plus/minus with a +6 rating. His brother, Henrik, was not close to that mark, but Samuelsson was at +5 to finish second. Goaltender Roberto Luongo has arguably been the best goaltender in UNP play in these two tournaments. He won the UNP Vezina Trophy in the inaugural tournament and is having another strong campaign this year. In this series, he posted a 4-3-0 record to go along with a 2.71 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. Not his best series, but not bad.
