Second Round Recap & Team Stat Leaders After Two Rounds

The Second Round of the 2015 Ultimate NHL Playoff made up for some of the lack of competitiveness in the First Round. Only three series’ in the First Round went 6+ games, but 9 went 6+ games in the Second Round, including six series’ that went a full seven games. Of the 16 matchups, six were won by the lower seeds. A couple of which were not so surprising, including the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres, a reigning Semifinalist, sweeping the 10th-seeded ’00-’01 New Jersey Devils and the 24th-seeded ’99-’00 Florida Panthers defeating the 9th-seeded ’19-’20 Ottawa Senators (original) in six games. There were two really surprising upsets in this series for me: the 25th-seeded ’83-’84 Washington Capitals defeating the 8th-seeded ’81-’82 New York Islanders in seven games and the 28th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks defeating the 5th-seeded ’14-’15 Chicago Blackhawks in five games. HOWEVER, all that being said, the most shocking result of this series was not a SEEDED upset. The reigning runners up, the 17th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames, lost in six games to the 16th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars, who, outside of the team that beat Calgary in the Final last year, are the only team to slow down the Flames’ incendiary offense.
