One of the lowest-scoring series’ of the tournament so far. A battle of the goaltenders goes to Chris Osgood and the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings. They allowed the 14th-seeded ’34-’35 Montreal Maroons just five goals over the four games.

The offense hasn’t really exploded yet in this tournament, except for a couple of their stars. One of them is Henrik Zetterberg, who has led them all tournament long offensively and led them in goal scoring here with four goals. Johan Franzen and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom were tied for second with two goals each. Tomas Holmstrom, surprisingly, led Detroit in assists with four helpers while Lidstrom was tied for second at three with fellow defenseman Brian Rafalski. Atop the overall scoring leaderboard for the Red Wings was both Lidstrom and Zetterberg who both finished with five points. Holmstrom and Rafalski were tied for second with four points apiece. Both Lidstrom and Rafalski were tied for the highest plus/minus rating for the Red Wings at +4. Meanwhile, there was a five-way tie for second at +3 that included Datsyuk, Holmstrom and Zetterberg. Osgood was the star of this series, though. To go along with his two shutouts, he posted a 1.25 goals against average and a .958 save percentage. Some unreal numbers.

As I said before, the Maroons were only able to score five times in this series and two of those goals came from Earl Robinson. Defenseman Stewart Evans was then the only Maroon to finish with more than one assist, with just two helpers, to lead the team. Evans and Robinson were tied for the team lead in overall scoring at two points, alongside Herb Cain and Russ Blinco. Hooley Smith led Montreal in plus/minus with a rating of +3 while defenseman Al Shields was second with a +2 rating. Goaltender Alec Connell had a decent series for the Maroons. He posted a 3.00 goals against average and a .917 save percentage over the four games.

The 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Red Wings are making their second appearance in the UNP, but for the first time, they are moving on to the Quarterfinal. In the inaugural UNP, they were eliminated in the Third Round by the eventual runners up. It was a successful tournament for the 14th-seeded ’34-’35 Maroons. After losing in the Second Round in the inaugural UNP, they won their first series in UNP history this year despite not exactly deserving it. The ’07-’08 Red Wings will face either the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers or the 22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Vancouver Canucks!

Up next in the Third Round, the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers take on the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres!
