Game 1 of this series turned out to be the game with the widest margin of victory at three (6-3 final). After that, this series featured a triple overtime in Game 2 and three one-goal games to finish the series. In the end, the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres took two of the last three games to upset the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers in seven games.

Vic Hadfield was a scoring machine for the Rangers in this series with seven, by far a team high for New York. Bruce MacGregor finished second behind him in goal scoring with just three goals. Hadfield’s two linemates were the top two playmakers for New York with Jean Ratelle tallying seven assists and Rod Gilbert notching five. Hadfield finished with a total of nine points to lead the Rangers in overall scoring while Ratelle was right behind him in second with eight. The top scorers for New York were also on the ice for most of Buffalo’s goals, though, so they suffered from some god awful plus/minus numbers. Only three five players posted ratings that were not in the negatives. Defenseman Ab DeMarco Jr. and Gary Doak were tied for the team lead in plus/minus at +2. MacGregor was tied for second at +1 with Ted Irvine. Goaltender Ed Giacomin didn’t face many shots in this series, just over 30 per game on average, so his save percentage was not very good. He posted a 3-4-0 record with a 3.71 goals against average and a .881 save percentage.

For the Sabres, there was a four-way tie for the team lead in goals at four, which included all three members of their top line, Danny Gare, Rick Martin and Gilbert Perreault. Also involved in that tie was depth forward Derek Smith. Gare did finish above everyone else in helpers for Buffalo with eight while Perreault was alone in second with even. Those two were also first and second in overall scoring for Buffalo. Gare’s 12 were tops while Perreault was a close second with 11. Defenseman Jim Schoenfeld posted a +5 plus/minus rating to lead the way for the Sabres, along with Martin. There was mass of humanity tied for second at +4 that included Perreault and Smith, as well as defensemen Larry Playfair and Richie Dunn. Much like his counterpart, goaltender Don Edwards didn’t face that many shots either and his save percentage suffered because of it. He posted a 4-2-1 record in the series with a 3.43 goals against average and a .887 save percentage.

The ’79-’80 Sabres continue to win. They have now advanced all the way from the First Round to the Quarterfinals. They have almost equaled their run last year where they made it all the way to the Semifinals. The ’71-’72 Rangers, in their first UNP appearance, took part in two very long, close seven-game series’. However, they fell one series short of matching last year’s representative who made it to the Quarterfinal. The ’79-’80 Sabres will face off against the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche in the Quarterfinal, who defeated the high-flying 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets in seven games!

Up next in the Third Round, the 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins take on the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings!
