13th-seeded ’74-’75 Kings Pull off MAJOR UPSET; Defeat 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Bruins in Six Games

This series began with a shutout by the 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins. After that, the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings took control of the series with two consecutive wins in overtime, including a triple overtime winner. The Kings finally did the Bruins in in Game 6 with a dominant performance.

One of the problems for the Bruins in this series was that some its stars were not always their best players in games. A bit of proof for that is the fact that Bobby Schmautz led the team in goal scoring with four goals. No disrespect to Schmautz, but when you think of the ’73-’74 Bruins, you don’t think of him. There was a five-way tie for second in goal scoring with two goals that included Wayne Cashman, Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge. Cashman was also tied for the team-lead in assists at four helpers with “defenseman” Bobby Orr. Espo and Hodge were tied for second at three with defenseman Carol Vadnais. Cashman finished with six points to finish atop the Bruins’ overall scoring leaderboard. There was a three-way tie for second at five points between Espo, Hodge and Orr. In goal, the usual sturdy Gilles Gilbert was not that in this series, especially late. He was pulled twice in the series and only recorded one of their two wins. He finished the series with a 3.00 goals against average and a .899 save percentage, but did post a 25-save shutout in Game 1. However, the Bruins got badly outshot as the series went along and Gilbert had to be at the top of his game, but he also was brutal in Game 6 where he allowed five goals on 10 shots in 11 and a half minutes.

The Kings win again, with some balance offensively and stingy defense. Dan Maloney and Tom Williams both scored five goals to tie for the team lead. Meanwhile Butch Goring and Bob Nevin were tied for second with three goals each. Mike Murphy led the Kings in helpers with five in the series. There was a three-way tie for second with four assists between Goring, Maloney and defenseman Terry Harper. At the top of LA’s overall scoring leaderboard, Maloney and Goring stood first and second with nine and seven points, respectively. Murphy also posted a team-high plus minus rating of +5, along with Juha Widing. There was a three-way tie right behind them for second at +4 that included Williams and, one of my favorite names, defenseman Sheldon Kannegiesser. Goaltender Rogie Vachon, once again, benefited from good defensive play in front of him. He only posted a .894 save percentage, but posted a 4-2-0 record and a 2.67 goals against average.

The ’74-’75 Kings continue on their surprising run. First, they came out of nowhere to earn the spot in the franchises qualifying tournament, but have now made it to the Quarterfinal after last year’s rep didn’t win a single round. For the ’73-’74 Bruins, this is a major letdown. In last year’s inaugural tournament, they didn’t lose a single game until the Semifinal where they were eliminated by the eventual champions. Now, they’re done after in the Third Round. The ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings will not face the winner of the next series, mentioned below, in the Quarterfinal!

Up next in the Third Round, the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers and the 28th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks!
