22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Canucks Put up a Fight against 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Oilers, but Oilers Prove Too Much in Game 7

The home teams were undefeated in this seven game series. The first four games were relatively close. The 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers were outscored by the 22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Vancouver Canucks 17-16 combined in the first four games, even though each team won twice. However, over the final three games of the series, the Oilers outscored the Canucks 12-7.

Wayne Gretzky led the Oilers offensively over the seven games. Shocker, I know. He led them in goal scoring with nine while Mike Krushelnyski was second with just four goals. Meanwhile, defenseman Paul Coffey was a playmaking machine for the Oilers. He tallied 12 helpers in the series and now has over 30 assists in 14 games in the tournament. Jarri Kurri was second with a very impressive nine helpers in the seven games. It was Gretzky and Coffey were first and second atop Edmonton’s overall scoring leaderboard with 15 and 14 points, respectively. There was a three-way tie for the team’s top plus/minus rating between all three members of their top line (Gretzky-Kurri-Krushelnyski). All three posted +11 ratings while defenseman Charlie Huddy was second with a +7 rating. Goaltender Grant Fuhr certainly had a better series than he did in the Second Round. He posted a 4-3-0 record, but a 3.29 goals against average. However, he did posted a decent .912 save percentage.

The Canucks could not keep up with the Oilers’ offense over all seven games. However, they did have fairly decent balance offensively. Alexandre Burrows scored six times to lead Vancouver in goal-scoring while Ryan Kesler was second right behind him with five. The Sedin twins were the top two playmakers for the Canucks in the series. Henrik Sedin tallied eight assists while Daniel Sedin was a close second with seven assists. Those two same twins you may have heard of finished first and second in overall scoring for the Canucks. Daniel totaled 11 points and Henrik totaled nine points. Only a handful of Canucks finished with positive plus/minus ratings. However, defensemen Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis posted solid ratings of +7 and +5, respectively, to lead Vancouver. Lastly, in most of Vancouver’s matchups in both of the two tournaments, they’ve won games with great goaltending from Roberto Luongo. However, he’s never faced an offense like this Oilers offense and his numbers reflected it. He posted a 3-3-1 record, but along with a 4.00 goals against average and a .878 save percentage.

In their first trip to the Ultimate NHL Playoff, the ’84-’85 Oilers have now matched last year’s representative, who won eight of the first nine games before being eliminated in the Quarterfinal in five games. However, the ’84-’85 Oilers have need to win Game 7’s in the Second and Third Rounds to make it to the Quarterfinal. The ’10-’11 Canucks also played in two Game 7’s, but after sweeping their First Round matchup. However, they fared better than last year when they were eliminated in the Second Round. The ’84-’85 Oilers will now face the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings in the Quarterfinal, who swept the 14th-seeded ’34-’35 Montreal Maroons in the Third Round!

Up next, to finish the Third Round, the 24th-seeded ’99-’00 Florida Panthers take on the 25th-seeded ’83-’84 Washington Capitals!
