The 25th-seeded ’83-’84 Washington Capitals got better as the series went along after a narrow victory in Game 1 for the 24th-seeded ’99-’00 Florida Panthers. The Caps won Game 2 in overtime and then took the next three games by a combined score of 13-6.

The Panthers struggled to score in this series. Only three players scored more than once for Florida over the course of the five games. Mark Parrish and Mike Sillinger were tied for the team lead in goals with three while Pavel Bure was alone in second with two goals. Sillinger was tops on the Panthers in assists, as well, with four helpers. Defenseman Robert Svehla was right behind Sillinger in assists with three. Only Ivan Novoseltsev was the only other Panther to tally more than one assist (2). Naturally, Sillinger was the leading scorer for Florida with seven points in the seven games while Parrish and Svehla were tied for second with four points each. There was a three-way tie for the team lead in plus/minus between the three members of Florida’s top line of Bure, Viktor Kozlov and Ray Whitney all at +2. Then, there was a five-way tie at +1 for second on the team that included Novoseltsev and Parrish. Goaltending was not a strong point for the Panthers in this series. Mike Vernon had a save percentage of .903 while allowing 4.00 goals per game.

Nine different players scored for Washington in this series, but only five of those players scored more than once. Mike Gartner was a machine for the Caps in this tournament and led them in goals with seven. Defenseman Rod Langway was second behind Gartner with just three goals. It was another defenseman, one not known for offense, that led the team in helpers. Scott Stevens registered seven assists in the series while Bob Carpenter was second with six. Gartner finished with 12 points to lead the Capitals in overall scoring while Carpenter and Stevens were tied for second with eight points each. Stevens also finished with the highest plus/minus rating for Washington at +7 while Carpenter was a close second at +6. Goaltender Al Jensen stepped up his play in this series. To go along with his 4-1-0 record, he posted a 2.40 goals against average and a .922 save percentage, which were both better than his stats in the Second Round.

The ’83-’84 Capitals continue to trail blaze for the Washington franchise. After last year’s representative was swept out of the First Round, this year, the ’83-’84 Caps were the first Washginton team to win a series and now they’re into the Quarterfinal. It was a nice tournament, though, for the ’99-’00 Panthers. However, they did benefit from facing two teams from the ’20s in their first two rounds. Last year’s rep also made it out of the First Round, but this run by the ’99-’00 Panthers is the best for the Florida franchise so far in UNP history. The ’83-’84 Caps will face an incredible tough test in the Quarterfinal as they will face the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens, who swept the 16th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars in the Third Round!

That wraps up the Third Round! The Quarterfinal will being in a couple of days, but before that, there will be recap and stat leader updated posts!
