Third Round Recap and Team Stat Leaders through Three Rounds

The Third Round had a mix of good and bad. Two of the eight series’ were sweeps. Two of the eight went five games. One series went six games and finally, three went the full length of seven games. Both the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens and the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings handled their business in four games while the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers needed seven games to get rid of the 22nd-seeded ’10-’11 Vancouver Canucks. One high seed that didn’t handle their opponent was the 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins. After reaching the Semifinal last year in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff, the ’73-’74 Bruins are out after the Third Round after they were upset by the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings.

Another reigning Semifinalist, the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres DID move on as they defeated the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers in seven games for a “seeded” upset. Arguably the highest-scoring series of the tournament took place between the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche and the 31st-seeded ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets. The top line for the Jets continued to put up insane numbers, but fell in seven games to the Avs. The Broad Street Bullies are also onto the Quarterfinal. The 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers defeated the 28th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks in five games despite being shorthanded more than any other team in the tournament by a large margin. Finally, the ’83-’84 Washington Capitals pulled off a “seeded” upset in their five-game win over the 24th-seeded ’99-’00 Florida Panthers.
