This series featured three games that went to overtime and it began in Game 1. The 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche won that one by a score of 3-2. Then, they won Game 3 in overtime to take a 3-0 series lead. The 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres needed an overtime winner to stave off elimination in Game 5, but a four-goal second period for the Avs in Game 6 helped clinch a spot in the Semis.

It’s been two guys thats have led the way for Colorado’s offense in this tournament and they led them in goal scoring here in the Quarterfinal. Joe Sakic scored a team-high five goals while Milan Hejduk was right behind him in second with four. Meanwhile, defenseman Ray Bourque was a major playmaker for the Avalanche. He tallied a series-high eight assists while there was a four-way tie for second with just three that included Sakic, Alex Tanguay and Peter Forsberg. Bourque and Sakic both finished with eight points to tie for the team lead. Hejduk and Tanguay were tied for second in overall scoring with six points each. The defensive pairing of Aaron Miller and Greg de Vries was responsible for the highest plus/minus rating for Colorado. Both de Vries and Miller were +5 while there was a five-way tie for second at +2, including Adam Deadmarsh and defenseman Rob Blake. Goaltender Patrick Roy wasn’t exactly good in this series, but it was his best series so far in the tournament. He posted a 4-1-2 record along with a 3.33 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

Gilbert Perreault was the overall leading scorer in this series and he also led the Sabres in goals with five. Defenseman Jim Schoenfeld scored four goals to finished second right behind Perreault, who also finished with a team-high five assists. Danny Gare and defenseman John Van Boxmeer both notched four helpers to finish tied for second. As I said earlier, Perreault had the most points of any player in this series (10) while Gare and Schoenfeld were tied for second with seven. Dave Schultz, yeah, that’s right, was a +5 in the series to lead Buffalo, and surprisingly, does not lead the team in penalties in minutes. Gare and Perreault were tied for second in plus/minus at +4. One area was Buffalo just wasn’t itself in this series was in net. Goaltender Don Edwards had probably his worst series in both of these first two tournaments. He posted a 2-2-1 record to go with a 3.50 goals against average and a very poor .883 save percentage.

For the first time in their UNP history, the Avalanche are heading to the Semifinal! After last year’s representative was eliminated in the Third Round, the ’00-’01 Avalanche have defeated the 18th seed, the 31st seed, who were one of the highest-powered performing teams at the time and now the 23rd seed, who was a Semifinalist last year. Like I just said, the ’79-’80 Sabres made it to the Semifinal last year, but this year they fall one round short of matching that. After two sweeps to begin their tournament, the Sabres narrowly got out of the Third Round before being eliminated here in the Quarterfinal. In the Semifinal, the ’00-’01 Avalanche will face the winner of our next series!

Next up in the Quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings face off against the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers!
