After dropping the first two games of the series, including an overtime loss in Game 2, the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers won the next four to defeat the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings.

It was the usual suspects for Detroit that led them offensively. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg were tied for the team lead in goals over the six games with four apiece. Tomas Holmstrom was tied with defenseman Brian Rafalski for second in goals with three. Zetterberg was also tied for the team lead in apples for the Wings with eight. He shared that mark with defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Of course, Zetterberg finished with a team-high in points with 12 while Datsyuk was second with nine. The Red Wings didn’t have many players featuring positive plus/minus ratings in this series. Only Jiri Hudler, Valtteri Filppula and Matt Ellis posted positive ratings as all of the finished at +2. The only other player to not post a negative rating was Dallas Drake who finished even. In goal, Chris Osgood was having a Vezina quality tournament, but he stumbled big time in this series. He posted a 5.17 goals against average and a horrid .837 save percentage over the six games.

As the title states, Wayne Gretzky lead the Oilers offensively, yet again. He posted a team-high nine goals over the six games while Mike Krushelnyski was second behind him with five goals. The Great One also finished with nine assists to tie for the team lead with defenseman Paul Coffey, who has now totaled a very impressive 40 assists in 20 games this tournament. Krushelnyski was also tied for second in helpers at eight with Jari Kurri. Naturally, Gretzky’s 18 points also were a team-high while Krushelnyski finished second with 13 points in the six games. To nobody’s surprise, Gretzky finished with the highest plus/minus rating at +12 while Krushelnyski, to nobody’s surprise, was tied for second at +11 with Kurri. One thing that really improved for Edmonton in this surprise was goaltending. Grant Fuhr had his best performance of the entire tournament in this series. He posted a 3.17 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, which are both highs for a single series for Fuhr in this tournament. He also posted a 37-save shutout in Game 3.

For the first time in their UNP history, the Oilers will make an appearance in the Semifinal! Last year, Edmonton’s representative was swept out of the Quarterfinal round. This year, though, the ’84-’85 Oilers have fought through two seven-game series’ and now a six-game series to clinch a spot in the Semifinal. Meanwhile, the Red Wings franchise also had their best UNP run yet. Last year, the ’07-’08 Red Wings fell to the eventual runners up in six games in just the Third Round. However, they breezed through their first two matchups before being eliminated here in the Quarterfinal. In the Semifinal, the ’84-’85 Oilers will play the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche, who defeated the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres in six games in the Quarterfinal!

Next up in the Quarterfinal, the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers face the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings!
