This series was a battle of the goaltenders. Only 19 goals were scored between the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers and the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings over six games. The Flyers scored 11 of the 19 goals and that was enough for them to move on to the Semifinal.

The Captain, Bobby Clarke, led the Flyers offensively, again. He led them in goals with four while both Bob Kelly and Ross Lonsberry scored twice to finish tied for second. Meanwhile, it was role reversal for Bill Barber as he led Philly in assists with 5 over the six games. Don Saleski was second in helpers with three. Clarke and Barber were first and second in overall scoring for the Flyers as they totaled six and five points, respectively. Barber was tied for the team lead in plus/minus rating with the final member with the legendary LCB Line, Reggie Leach, at +5. Defenseman Tom Bladon was tied for second at +4 with the Cap’N. Bernie Parent was STELLAR in this series. After dropping the first two games of the series, including an overtime loss, Parent won four in a row along just three goals over the course of those four games. He finished the series with a 4-1-1 record with a 1.17 goals against average and a .955 save percentage, which helps him continue to be a favorite for the UNP Vezina Trophy.

The Kings’ offense never really exploded in their tournament run and it certainly was shut down here. They scored eight goals over the six games and only Bob Berry and Dan Maloney scored more than once (2). Four players scored just once for LA during the series. Gene Carr and defenseman Sheldon Kannegiesser were tied for the team lead in assists with three while Maloney was the only other King with more than one assists with two. Maloney did finish as the Kings overall scoring leader at four points. Berry, Carr and Kannegiesser were all tied for second with three points each. Carr also posted a team-high +4 plus/minus rating while Berry was tied with Don Kozak for second at +2. Goaltender Rogie Vachon had another very good series, it was just he got outplayed for the first time. He posted a 2-4-0 record with a 1.83 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.

The ’74-’75 Flyers have beat up and shut down yet another foe! First, they became the first Flyers team to win a series in the UNP after the franchises representatives were upset in the Second Round, and now they’re moving on to the Semifinal.  For the ’74-’75 Kings, they had an incredibly impressive tournament, including an upset of a reigning semifinalist. They have outdone last year’s representative who were swept in their only series. In the Semifinal, the ’74-’75 Flyers will face the winner of our next series!

Next up in the Quarterfinal, the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens and the 25th-seeded ’83-’84 Washington Capitals!
