Les Habitants keep rolling on! The top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens are moving onto the Semifinal after beating up on the 25th-seeded ’83-’84 Washington Capitals. However, the Caps did give the Canadiens their first loss of the tournament, so, that’s something.
Guy Lafleur was at it again. He has been the best player in this tournament by far. He scored nine goals in the five games here to lead Montreal in goal scoring. There was a four-way tie for second with two goals, including Steve Shutt and Pierre Mondou. Defenseman Guy Lapointe led the Canadiens in helpers in the series with six while Lafleur was tied with Shutt and Mondou for second with five assists. Naturally, Lafleur finished atop the Canadiens’ overall scoring leaderboard as he totaled 14 points. Lapointe, Mondou and Shutt were all tied for second with a total of seven points each. Lafleur also posted the highest plus/minus rating for Montreal with a +7. Meanwhile, Lapointe was alone in second with a +5 rating. Surprisingly, goaltending Ken Dryden was the busier of the goaltenders in this series. However, he was up to the challenge, as usual. He posted a 4-1-0 record with a 2.20 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. Dryden also posted a 30-save shutout in Game 5 to help seal the series.
Washington’s offense sputtered a bit here. No player scored more than twice in the series. Four players were all tied for the team lead with two goals, including Mike Gartner and Dave Christian. Bob Carpenter was the top playmaker for the Caps, yet again. He tallied five assists while Christian was right behind him with four. With two goals and four assists, Christian finished as the Capitals’ leading scorer at six points while Carpenter was second with five. There was a six-way tie for the top spot among plus/minus ratings for Washington, which included defensemen Larry Murphy and Rod Langway. Goaltender Al Jensen hasn’t been spectacular in this tournament, but he wasn’t very good here. He posted a 1-3-1 record to go along with a 3.60 goals against average and a dreadful .867 save percentage.
