This game was pure domination by the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens. However, it was the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers who got on the board first. Bobby Clarke scored his ninth goal of the tournament to give Philly a 1-0 lead a little over five minutes into the game, but that would be their only goal of this Game 2. However, the Habs tied it just 34 seconds later with a goal from Steve Shutt. Then, in the final seconds of the opening period, Jacques Lemaire scored his seventh goal of the tournament to give the Canadiens a 2-1 lead. Guy Lafleur recorded the primary assists on both of Montreal’s goals, but then scored the first of two goals in the game a little over a minute into the second period.

He scored again at the 12:46 mark of the second period to give the Habs a 4-1 lead and then Shutt scored his second of the game late in the period, which resulted in the Flyers pulling Bernie Parent for Wayne Stephenson. Tempers flared, again, between these two and again it was Dave Schultz for the Flyers. He was given a five-minute major penalty for elbowing to go along with a 10-minute game misconduct. The third ejection of the series between these two teams and the second for Schultz. On the resulting PP, defenseman Guy Lapointe scored his second of the tournament to give Montreal a 6-1 lead, which would go on to be the final. The Habs outshot the Flyers 41-16 in the game and 14-2 in the third period alone.
