The 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers were able to jump on the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche in Game 1 and it didn’t look like it would happen here in Game 2, but it kind of did. The Avs got on the board first with a goal from Alex Tanguay halfway through the opening frame. However, after his goal, the Oilers rattled off three goals in about five and a half minutes to close out the first period. A goal each from Dave Hunter, Jari Kurri and defenseman Charlie Huddy. Edmonton held that 3-1 lead until a goal from Milan Hejduk five and a half minutes into the second period. I
t was his 18th of the tournament and Joe Sakic followed that up with his 21st of the tournament nearly halfway through the period to tie the game at three. The second period ended with a score of 3-3. A little over four minutes into the third period, defenseman Rob Blake was called for roughing, giving the Oilers what would turn out to be the only PP opportunity of the game. Defenseman Paul Coffey cashed in with his ninth goal of the tourney to give Edmonton a 4-3 lead. Exactly two minutes later, Mark Messier would give the Oilers a two-goal lead, which would be more than enough as goaltender Grant Fuhr would hold off Colorado for the 5-3 win.

The Avalanche were in this game in the third period and were not out shot by a wide margin, but the Oilers were the better team in the third period and now they’re up 2-0. Tomorrow, the Flyers will look to get on the board in their Semifinal against the Canadiens, who own a 2-0 lead of their own.
