The first two games of this series were fairly even in terms of chances, but for the first time, one team dominated by a wide margin and it was the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche. They outshot the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers 55-27 in the game and outshot them 40-17 in the final two periods. The Avs got a jump on the Oilers with two goals in a span of less then 50 seconds early in the first period. One from Shjon Podein and then one from Joe Sakic, his 22nd of the tournament, had the Avs up 2-0 until early in the second period. Wayne Gretzky scored his 31st of the tournament just 17 seconds into the second period to make it a 2-1 game.

However, Milan Hejduk would score just 36 seconds later to reinstate a two-goal lead for Colorado. Just like in the second, the Oilers would score early in the third to narrow the Avalanche lead down to one. Jaroslav Pouzar‘s first goal of the tournament at 1:25 f the third made it 3-2. However, the Avalanche would put 21 shots on Edmonton goaltender Grant Fuhr in the third period along with two goals to win 5-3. Ville Nieminen scored his sixth of the tournament at the 4:25 mark, with Peter Forsberg getting the primary assist. Foppa would then score a PP marker late in the period after Oilers forward Kevin McClelland was ejected for charging to finish off the 5-2 win.
