This game was basically eventless in the first two periods outside of a roughing minor on defenseman Larry Robinson for the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens. Then, early in the third, after coincidental roughing minors on defenseman Gilles Lupien and Don Saleski of the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers, the Canadiens finally broke the goalless draw with Yvon Lambert‘s fifth goal of the tournament. Then about ten minutes of game time later, wingers Bob Gainey of Montreal and Gary Dornhoefer were also given coincidental minors for roughing. Just 17 seconds after that, Rejean Houle caught a Flyer with a high-stick and also drew blood, resulting in a four-minute PP for Philly with less than five minutes remaining. The Canadiens nearly killed it off when Ross Lonsberry potted his fifth goal of the tournament with just under a minute remaining. The Flyers had also pulled goaltender Bernie Parent and had a 6-on-4 advantage. The game went into overtime, thanks to Lonsberry, but last year’s UNP MVP, Steve Shutt, scored just 18 seconds into the overtime to give Montreal a 2-1 win and a 3-1 series lead.
