Facing elimination, the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers were able to get a jump on the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens early in Game 5. Reggie Leach scored his eighth goal of the tournament just 39 seconds in to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Then, just about two minutes later the other winger on the famed “LCB Line,” Bill Barber, potted his ninth of the tourney to give the Flyers an early 2-0 lead. Shortly after Barber’s goal, Dave Schultz would be given his ninth ejection of the tournament. This time it was for a five-minute major for spearing. Just after Philly finished killing off the Montreal PP, defenseman Larry Robinson would break through for the Habs to make it 2-1. Montreal would tie the game at the 8:39 mark of the second period courtesy of Yvon Lambert. Then, the Canadiens would score twice in the final six minutes of the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. Guy Lafleur would account for one of those goals, his 27th of the tournament. Nearly halfway through the third period, Lafleur potted his second goal of the game to put this one out of reach at 5-2. The Flyers’ solid run is officially over as the Habs advance to the UNP Final after winning the inaugural tournament last year.
