Semifinal Round Recap and Team Stat Leaders through Five Rounds

The Semifinal Round of the 2nd Annual Ultimate NHL Playoff went as expected! The top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens defeated the 12th-seeded ’74-’75 Philadelphia Flyers in five games. The Habs handled the Flyers very easily in the first two games of their series, beating them by a combined 11-2 over the two games. The Flyers got on the board in the series with a 2-1 win in Game 3 as they held the Canadiens to just 22 shots on goal. However, the Habs took a 3-1 series lead thanks to an overtime winner from Steve Shutt in Game 4 just 18 seconds into the overtime period. Then, on the back of three goals in the third period, Montreal eliminated the Flyers in Game 5 with a 5-2 win to advance to the Ultimate NHL Final. They will look to repeat as Ultimate NHL Champions after an earlier Habs team won the inaugural tournament last year.

Meanwhile, the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers defeated the 15th-seeded ’00-’01 Colorado Avalanche. The Oilers had their way much like the Habs did in the first two games of this Semifinal matchup, outscoring Colorado 12-5. The Avalanche took Game 3 in dominant fashion. They outshot Edmonton 55-27 as they won 5-2. In Game 4, Colorado broke out to a 4-1 lead after the first period, but had to hang on late to tie the series up with a 6-5 win. The Oilers would then retake control of the series and end it within the next two games. The won Game’s 5 and 6 by a combined score of 10-4 while outshooting the Avalanche by 10 or more shots in both games. So, this sets up a matchup in the Ultimate NHL Final between arguably the two greatest dynasties in NHL History, the late ’70s Canadiens and the mid-to-late ’80s Oilers!
