The 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers dominated the first and third periods of Game 3 while the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens dominated the second period. However, the Oilers were able to capitalize on their domination. They scored four times in the first period while outshooting Montreal 10-5. Two of those goals came from Jari Kurri, including a PP goal. The other two goals came from defenseman Paul Coffey, his 12th on the tournament, and Mark Napier, his ninth of the tournament. Then, in the second period, despite outshooting the Oilers 17-5, the Habs were only able to out-score them 1-0. Their only goal in the period came on an unassisted goal from Guy Lafleur.
Kurri completed his hat trick just three seconds into the third period, which forced the Canadiens to pull goaltender Ken Dryden for the first time in the tournament. After a goal from defenseman Lee Fogolin Jr. a few minutes later, Kurri potted his fourth of the game and his 23rd of the tournament to give the Oilers a 7-1 lead. The Habs scored a “consolation” goal in the final five minutes, a PP marker from defenseman Serge Savard, but they now find themselves in a very deep hole. With the 7-2 loss, they now trail the Oilers 3-0 in the 2nd Annual Ultimate NHL Final.
