The top-seeded ’78-’79 Canadiens trailed 4-2 after two periods. Then, they proceeded to score six goals in the third period to win Game 6, 8-6, for their third straight win after trailing 3-0 in this series. The 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers got off to a fast start with Jari Kurri scoring his 27th of the tournament just 16 seconds in. The Habs evened it up a little over five minutes later courtesy of Steve Shutt‘s 13th. Then, with six minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the opening period, Guy Lafleur scored his 30th of the tournament to give Montreal a 2-1 lead, which they would hold into the second period. It didn’t last very long into the second, though, as Kurri scored his second of the game just 22 seconds in. Defenseman Paul Coffey potted his 13th of the tournament at the 11:20 mark of the second to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead.

They would increase that lead to two when Wayne Gretzky scored his 38th in the final minutes of the period. Montreal’s comeback in the third period would begin with a PP goal from Shutt at the 2:46 mark. Then, just under a minute later, defenseman Guy Lapointe scored just his fourth of the tournament to tie the game at four. 18 seconds later, Kurri finished off his hat trick to give Edmonton a 6-5 lead, but that lead would only last about two minutes. Doug Jarvis re-tied the game for the Habs with his fourth of the tournament. Pierre Mondou would scored two goals in about a minute and a half towards the middle of the period to open up a 7-5 lead for Montreal. With six plus minutes left in the game, Yvon Lambert potted his 10th of the tournament to add a little extra insurance. Edmonton would score once in the final five minutes, but 8-6 would be the final in favor of Montreal.
