Top-seeded ’78-’79 Canadiens Come Back from 3-0 and Win Game 7 in OT to Become Ultimate NHL Champions!!!

The Montreal Canadiens have now won both the inaugural and the 2nd Annual Ultimate NHL Champions! The top-seeded ’78-’79 Canadiens take the crown here in the 2nd Annual UNP after falling behind 3-0 in this Final to the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers, but coming back to win three straight before winning Game 7 tonight in overtime! Pierre Mondou got the Habs off to a great start with his 11th goal of the tournament just 38 seconds into the game. Then, nearly halfway through the opening frame, Guy Lafleur potted his 31st of the tournament to give Montreal a 2-0 lead. Then, Mondou scored his second of the game just 36 seconds into the second period to give the top seed a 3-0 lead.

Montreal came back from a 3-0 lead in the series and the Oilers came back from a 3-0 deficit in Game 7 to force an overtime. Edmonton’s comeback began with Mark Napier‘s 10th of the tourney three and a half minutes into the second period. Then, 14 seconds into the third period, Jari Kurri scored his 30th goal of the tourney to make it a one-goal game. The Oilers finally tied with when Mike Krushelnyski scored his 17th goal of the tournament at the 12:22 mark of the third period. It was Steve Shutt who scored the Championship-clinching goal for Montreal, his 15th goal of the tournament, just under five minutes into overtime.
