The Cleveland Barons only existed for two seasons and it has been the ’76-’77 Barons that have represented this brief franchise in both Ultimate NHL Playoffs. However, the chance of them ever getting out of the First Round is not high and they didn’t here.

First Round:

Swept by 20th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 4-0

The ’76-’77 Barons under head coach Jack Evans posted a 25-42-13 record, which was good for 63 points and 4th/last in the Adams Division. They finished 10th out of 18 teams in goals for with 240 (3.00/game) and 11th in goals against with 292 (3.65/game). Hockey Reference ranked the Barons’ strength of schedule as the third toughest in the league, and their SRS rating system had the Barons ranked 12th overall in the league. The ’76-’77 Barons missed the playoffs by 18 points.

Dennis Maruk was the main guy in the ’76-’77 Barons’ offense. He posted a team high 28 goals, 50 assists and 78 points. Al MacAdam as second on the team in assists with 41 and points with 63. Wayne Merrick was third behind Maruk and MacAdam in both assists and points with 38 and 56, respectively. Bob Murdoch was second behind Maruk in goals with 23, but in only 57 games, and MacAdam was also third in goals with 22. Defenseman Mike Christie was the only standout on the team in plus/minus with a rating of +18. Jim Pappin was second in plus/minus with +5 in only 24 games played and Maruk was right behind him at +4. Gilles Meloche was their starting goaltender and appeared in 51 games while posting a 3.47 goals against average with two shutouts. Backups Gary Edwards and Gary Simmons made 17 and 15 appearances, respectively, with the two of them combining for three shutouts.

Up next are the 44th-seeded ’74-’75 Kansas City Scouts!
