To start, here is the entire tournament bracket.

The ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames will be the original Flames’ representative for the third time out of a possible three tournaments. They dropped just one game in the entire qualifying tournament. They started out this Final by scoring three goals in the first period of Game 1. However, with a goal in the second period and another with a minute and change left in the third period, the ’76-’77 Atlanta Flames made it a 3-2 game. However, at the 19:18 mark of the third,Willi Plett of the ’76-’77 Flames was called for holding, so that put the ’78-’79 Flames on the PP. The ’76-’77 Flames didn’t quit and pulled goaltender Phil Myre, but Guy Chouinard potted a rare empty-net, PP goal in the final second to seal the win, 4-2. It was Chouinard’s second goal and third point of the game. Game 2 was a much higher scoring affair. The team’s equaled their scoring output of Game 1 in the first period alone. Chouinard scored twice as the ’78-’79 Flames led 4-2 after the first. Each team scored twice in the remaining two periods for an 8-6 final in favor of the ’78-’79 Flames.

Both Chouinard and Bob MacMillan finished with five points. Meanwhile, Plett and defenseman Richard Mulhern both totaled three points for the ’76-’77 Flames in the loss. After two periods in Game 3, the ’76-’77 Flames led 5-4. However, Jean Pronovost tied it just under three minutes into the third for the ’78-’79 Flames. Then, with just under seven minutes left, Ken Houston scored to give the ’76-’77 Flames a 6-5 lead. In the final five minutes, though, the ’78-’79 Flames scored twice to win 7-6, including a third goal from Pronovost, who finished with five total points, for a hat trick. The ’78-’79 Flames completed the sweep with a 5-2 win in Game 4 as the ’76-’77 Flames never got within three goals. Chouinard capped the series with a four point night as his push offensively led the way all series.
