Here is a little description of each team in the tourney:

  1. ’79-’80 Minnesota North Stars (36-28-16, 88 points (3rd in Adams Division), Lost in Semifinal, 0.69 SRS)
  2. ’81-’82 Minnesota North Stars (37-23-20, 94 points (1st in Norris Division), Lost in Division Semifinal, 0.53 SRS)
  3. ’80-’81 Minnesota North Stars (35-28-17, 87 points (3rd in Adams Division), Lost in Stanley Cup Final, 0.33 SRS)
  4. ’82-’83 Minnesota North Stars (40-24-16, 96 points (2nd in Norris Division), Lost in Division Final, 0.31 SRS)
  5. ’72-’73 Minnesota North Stars (37-30-11, 85 points (3rd in West Division), Lost in Quarterfinal, 0.29 SRS)
  6. ’71-’72 Minnesota North Stars (37-29-12, 86 points (2nd in West Division), Lost in Quarterfinal, 0.25 SRS)
  7. ’85-’86 Minnesota North Stars (38-33-9, 85 points (2nd in Norris Division), Lost in Division Semifinal, 0.08 SRS)
  8. ’90-’91 Minnesota North Stars (27-39-14, 68 points (4th in Norris Divison), Lost in Stanley Cup Final, -0.10 SRS)

The ’79-’80 Minnesota North Stars were the 27th seed in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff. They defeated the 38th-seeded ’75-’76 California Golden Seals in six games in the 1st Round, but were then swept by the 6th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks in the 2nd Round. The ’82-’83 Minnesota North Stars repped the franchise in the Second Annual UNP and matched the output of the ’79-’80 North Stars in the inaugural tourney by making it to the Second Round before being eliminated by the Oilers dynasty.

Players to Watch:

  • C – Neal Broten – The Minnesota native and member of the legendary 1980 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team spent 13 seasons as a member of the North Stars franchise in both Minnesota and Dallas. He is the North Stars’ all-time leading scorer with 796 points in 876 games played.
  • F – Bobby Smith – Another long time member of the North Stars, Smith was a part of a top line for the ’79-’80 North Stars in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff that was one of the highest scoring in the first two rounds. Smith was among the tourney leaders in assists and points before they were eliminated.
  • RW – Dino Ciccarelli – Dino was over a point-per-game player during nine plus seasons with the North Stars. He also averaged 0.55 goals-per-game, which led him to being second in North Stars history in goals with 332 in 602 games.
