Here is the 2016 Carolina Hurricanes Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.
The 2nd-seeded ’08-’09 Carolina Hurricanes started the series with a 5-3 win in Game 1 as longtime NHLer Tuomo Ruutu, longtime captain Eric Staal and defenseman Joni Pitkanen all totaled three points. However, in Game 2, they trailed the 5th-seeded ’01-’02 Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 late. The ’08-’09 Canes pulled goaltender Cam Ward for the extra attacker and with a little less than 30 seconds remaining, Ray Whitney tied it with his second goal of the game. Then, about four and a half minutes into overtime, Erik Cole scored the game-winner to give the ’08-’09 Canes a 2-0 series lead. The ’01-’02 Canes got some revenge in Game 3 with an overtime winner of their on from Ron Francis to win it 3-2. Goaltender Arturs Irbe stopped 48 of 50 shots against in the win. Then, in Game 4, after the two teams combined for just two goals in the first 49+ minutes, they combined for four goals in the final 10+ minutes. The ’08-’09 Canes scored three of those four goals as they came back to force an overtime.
The ’01-’02 Canes got their second straight OT win with Shane Willis scoring the game-winner this time as they tied the series at two. The ’01-’02 Canes carried their momentum into Game 5 as they led 4-1 after two periods. They held on for a 4-2 win despite being outshot 42-26, including 20-8 in the first period alone. Irbe starred in the win, stopping 40 of those 42 shots while Jeff O’Neill scored twice. Game 6 required overtime as well. It was Scott Walker‘s turn to play hero as he scored the game-winner for the ’08-’09 Hurricanes six plus minutes into OT. His goal forced a Game 7 and it was the ’08-’09 Hurricanes that came out on top in the final game with a 4-1 win. Both Walker and Whitney totalled three points in the win. The ’08-’09 Canes will be the third different representative for Carolina as we head into the Third Annual Ultimate NHL Playoff.
