Here is the 2016 Colorado Avalanche Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.
The 4th-seeded ’02-’03 Avalanche were making their first appearance in the qualifier final and took Game 1 by a score of 5-3. Foppa, or Peter Forsberg, registered four assists in the win while Milan Hejduk scored two goals and added an assist. The ’02-’03 Avs then took a 2-0 lead into the third period of Game 2, but the 2nd-seeded ’95-’96 Avalanche scored three unanswered goals in the third to come back and win 3-2. Adam Deadmarsh scored two of those three goals, including the game-tying and game-winning goals. The ’95-’96 Avs took a 2-1 series lead when they took Game 3 by a final of 3-2 as Joe Sakic scored a late winner. Forsberg, again, was a leading contributor with a couple more assists in Game 3. The ’95-’96 Avs then scored four times in the first period of Game 4 on their way to a 4-1 win and a 3-1 series lead. Cap’N Sakic scored twice while Valeri Kamensky pitched in with two helpers.
Game 5 turned into a bit of a marathon as the ’02-’03 Avs were trying to stave off elimination. They led 2-1 late in the third period, but a Deadmarsh goal with about a minute and a half remaining in regulation forced overtime for the ’95-’96 Avs. It wasn’t until the 1:36 mark of the second overtime that Sakic finally scored the overtime winner for the ’02-’03 Avs and took this series to a Game 6. Patrick Roy stood on his head for the ’02-’03 Avs in the win stopping 64 of 66 shots against. In Game 6, Andrei Kovalenko scored his second goal of the game a minute and a half into the third period to give the ’95-’96 Avs a 3-1 lead. However, in a span of a minute and a half towards the middle of the third, the ’02-’03 Avs scored twice to fight back and even the game at three. Then, the ’95-’96 Avs retook the lead thanks to a goal from Mike Ricci with just over five minutes remaining. Roy and the ’95-’96 Avs would close the door from there to clinch their second Ultimate NHL Playoff berth with a 4-3 win.
