Here is the 2016 Philadelphia Flyers Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.
The 5th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers took this series in five games, but it was the 7th-seeded ’77-’78 Philadelphia Flyers that took the opening game. A goal each from Bill Barber and Bob Kelly led the ’77-’78 Flyers to a 2-1 win in Game 1. Goaltender Bernie Parent stopped 41 of 42 in the win. The ’84-’85 Flyers responded with a big 6-2 win in Game 2 behind a five-point performance from Brian Propp. Both Tim Kerr and defenseman Mark Howe posted three points in the win. Then, in Game 3, the ’77-’78 Flyers took a 5-2 lead courtesy of a PP goal from Barber at the 7:15 mark of the third period. However, just seconds after the halfway mark of the third period, defenseman Andre Dupont of the ’77-’78 Flyers was given a 5-minute major and a 10-minute game misconduct for elbowing, which gave the ’84-’85 Flyers a five-minute PP. The ’84-’85 Flyers took full advantage and so did Ilkka Sinisalo as he scored three times on that PP to give himself a hat trick and tie the game at five.
The game eventually went to overtime and Propp finally won it for the ’84-’85 Flyers a little over six minutes into the second overtime period. It was the ’84-’85 Flyers who then led late in the third period of Game 4 before Reggie Leach scored for the ’74-’75 Flyers to force an overtime. The ’84-’85 Flyers took this overtime as well as it was Derrick Smith who scored halfway through the overtime to give the ’84-’85 Flyers a 3-1 lead. Goalie Pelle Lindbergh stopped 45 of 47 shots against in the win and then stopped 31 of 32 shots against in Game 5, which the ’84-’85 Flyers took 3-1. Lindbergh stepped his play even higher in the final two games while it was a balanced offensive attack that helped the ’84-’85 Flyers clinch their first Ultimate NHL Playoff berth.
