The ’71-’72 Rangers are the reigning, two-time Ultimate NHL Playoff representatives for the blue shirts and have won at least one series in both tournaments. In the inaugural UNP, as the ninth seed, they made their way to the Quarterfinal before being eliminated by the top-seeded and eventual champion ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens. Then, in the Second Annual UNP, they were eliminated in the Third Round by interstate rival, the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres.

Players to Watch:

  • RW – Rod Gilbert – He spent an incredible 18 years with the franchise and never wore another team’s sweater. He is the franchises all-time leading scorer with 1,021 points in 1,065 games.
  • C – Mark Messier – In 10 years in New York, Messier is most-remembered for the promise he made in the 1994 Stanley Cup Final, but he was also about a point-per-game player.
  • C – Jean Ratelle – On a line with Gilbert, he also racked up some very good career numbers over 16 years as a blueshirt. He totaled 817 points in 862 games as a Ranger, but was also in the conversation for the Lady Byng trophy ever season.

The tournament results will be posted on the next weekday at 1 pm EST!
