Here is the 2016 Pittsburgh Penguins Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.
In Game 1, the 2nd-seeded ’15-’16 Pittsburgh Penguins really controlled the ’92-’93 Penguins and won 4-1 while holding them to just 26 shots on goal. Both Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang totaled a goal and an assist each in the win. A goal from Matt Cullen at the 10:20 mark of the third period of Game 2 gave the ’15-’16 Penguins a 2-0 lead. Incredibly, though, by the 11:54 mark, the tables would be turned and the ’92-’93 Penguins led 4-2. The ’92-’93 Penguins got four goals in a minute and 34 seconds form four different players and that won them Game 2 to tie the series. Goaltender Tom Barrasso stopped 37 of 39 shots against in the win. The ’92-’93 Penguins came back in Game 3, as well. They trailed 5-2 after Sidney Crosby scored his second goal of the game eight minutes into the second period.
However, two goals from Rick Tocchet late in the second period and a goal in the third period from Jaromir Jagr forced overtime for the ’92-’93 Penguins. A little over a minute into overtime Chris Kunitz was give a two-minute minor for cross-checking, just 40 seconds after coincidental roughing minors. Joe Mullen capitalized just 22 seconds into the resulting PP to give the ’92-’93 Penguins a 2-1 series lead. The ’15-’16 Penguins evened the series at two with their own OT winner in Game 4 courtesy of Malkin. However, it was multi-point efforts from Cullen and Carl Hagelin that led the way offensively. In Game 5, Kevin Stevens scored at the 14:48 mark of the second period to complete his hat trick and give the ’92-’93 Penguins a 4-2 lead. However, by the halfway point of the third period, it was the ’15-’16 Penguins who led 7-4 with five unanswered goals, including two from Sid. They held on for a 7-5 win to take a 3-2 series lead with Crosby posting a four-point game while Stevens, with four points (3G, 1A), and Mario Lemieux, with five assists, shined in the loss.
Game 6 started out with another one of those long runs of answered goals as the ’92-’93 Penguins scored six unanswered goals in the first period and won by a final of 6-2. Lemieux, again, played the role of distributor with three helpers while both Stevens and Tocchet scored twice. That took this series to a series-deciding seventh game. The ’15-’16 Pens took a 3-1 lead into the locker room after the first period. Then, just 10 seconds into the second, Stevens was give a five-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct for kneeing on Conor Sheary, which was judged as intentionally trying to injure an opposing player. The ’15-’16 Pens were unable to capitalize on the resulting five-minute PP. Jagr scored shortly after the PP ended to make it a one-goal game, but Sid returned the game to a two-goal lead with a goal of his own. However, two unanswered goals from Mullen in the third period forced an overtime for the ’92-’93 Penguins. Then, just about a minute and a half into OT, Tocchet scored the series-clincher for the ’92-’93 Penguins, who will make their first trip to the Ultimate NHL Playoff.
