5th-seeded ’71-’72 Rangers Sweep Their Way to Third Straight Trip to UNP; Defeat 6th-seeded ’72-’73 Rangers in Qualifier Final

Here is the 2016 New York Rangers Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.

The 5th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers did not drop a game in this qualifying tournament, meanwhile, the 6th-seeded ’72-’73 New York Rangers only dropped one game in this tourney, before the final. The sweep began with a 4-1 win in Game 1 for the ’71-’72 Rangers. Both Rod Gilbert and Vic Hadfield tallied a pair of assists in the win as four different players scored. Then, in Game 2, captain Hadfield scored twice and added an assist as the ’71-’72 Rangers won 5-2. The third member of the Goal-A-Game Line, Jean Ratelle, registered a couple of helpers in the win. Ratelle then scored a couple of goals in Game 3 as the ’71-’72 Rangers won 3-1. Defenseman Brad Park assisted on two of the Rangers’ goals in the win. The sweep was completed with a 4-3 win in Game 4. The ’71-’72 Rangers needed a late winner from Ted Irvine while Hadfield, once again, pitched in for a pair of goals to lead the offense. The ’71-’72 Rangers have now been the Original Six franchises representative in all three Ultimate NHL Playoffs.
