7th-seeded ’70-’71 Bruins Go Undefeated and Sweep Top-seeded ’71-’72 Bruins to Clinch First UNP Berth

Here is the 2016 Boston Bruins Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.

The 7th-seeded ’70-’71 Boston Bruins took the opening game of this series by a score of 5-3 on the back of three goals in the third period. Phil Esposito scored twice in the win for the ’70-’71 Bruins while the top-seeded ’71-’72 Boston Bruins’ Esposito registered a hat trick in the loss. Then, in Game 2, when John Bucyk scored a couple minutes into the third period, the ’70-’71 Bruins took a 6-0 lead. However, over the remaining time of the period, the ’71-’72 Bruins would score five times to make it a close game, but the ’70-’71 Bruins held on for a 7-5 win. Derek Sanderson and Wayne Cashman posted three-point efforts for the ’70-’71 Bruins with two goals and one assist and three assists, respectively.

Meanwhile, for the ’71-’72 Bruins, Bucyk scored twice and added an assist for his own three-point performance. Game 3 was domination for the ’70-’71 Bruins as they won 4-0 and doubled the ’71-’72 Bruins in shots. Goaltender Gerry Cheevers stopped all 21 shots for the shutout win while Cashman and John McKenzie, with a goal and an assist each, were the only players with more than one point. The ’71-’72 Bruins were able to rebound with a better performance in Game 4, but the sweep was completed with a 5-3 loss. Cheevers allowed just three goals in 39 shots against while five different players scored as the ’70-’71 Bruins clinch their first Ultimate NHL Playoff appearance.
