Here is the 2016 Detroit Red Wings Qualifying Tournament in its entirety.
Early on in this series, it looked like the 2nd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings were gonna run with it. They took the first three games of the series by a combined score of 13-4. Game 1 was a 5-1 final behind a balanced offensive attack of five different goal scorers. Goaltender Chris Osgood, the starter for both teams in this final, started off a good series for the ’07-’08 Red Wings by stopped 28 of 29 shots against. He followed that up by stopped 33 of 34 shots agaisnt in a 2-1 win in Game 2 as Johan Franzen and Daniel Cleary score their only two goals, both in the first period. Meanwhile, Osgood stopped 51 of 53 shots against for the 8th-seeded ’96-’97 Detroit Red Wings in the loss. The ’07-’08 Red Wings’ offense woke back up in Game 3 with a 6-1 win. Both Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg posted four-point efforts, with three goals and an assist and one goal and three assists, respectively.
The ’96-’97 Red Wings finally got on the board in the series with a 2-1 overtime win in Game 4. Brendan Shanahan scored the OT winner after Sergei Fedorov with a game-tying goal with four and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Not a bad pair. Shanny followed that OT winner with a four-goal effort in Game 5 as the ’96-’97 Red Wings staved off elimination with a 5-4 win. Defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and Steve Yzerman tallied a pair of assists for the ’96-’97 Red Wings. Their momentum ended their, however, because a 33-save shutout performance from Osgood led the ’07-’08 Red Wings to a 3-0 win in Game 6 to clinch the three-peat. Franzen, more commonly known as the Mule, was the only player in the win to register more than on point with his two assists. The ’07-’08 Red Wings are now the 18th team that will now have been their franchises representative in all three Ultimate NHL Playoffs.
