In the inaugural UNP, it was the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens ran through the tournament before defeating the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames in the Final. Then, in the Second Annual UNP, it was the top-seeded ’78-’79 Montreal Canadiens who won it, but not as easily. Despite only dropping two games before the Final, they fell behind 3-0 in the Final to the 6th-seeded ’84-’85 Edmonton Oilers. However, they won the next three games to force a Game 7 and then won that Game 7 in overtime to clinch the title.
