The 39th-seeded ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames have been trouble makers in the past and they caused some problems here for the 26th-seeded ’05-’06 Ottawa Senators. The ’05-’06 Senators needed an OT winner from Chris Kelly to take a 2-0 series lead before the ’78-’79 Flames took Game’s 3 and 4 to tie the series. Then, after an easy Game 5 victory, the ’05-’06 Senators had to come back four different times before they eventually clinched a series victory courtesy of Dany Heatley in overtime.

The Senators’ offense revolved around captain Daniel Alfredsson and the aforementioned Heatley. Alfie finished with a total of 15 points, which was 2nd behind only Heatley, who finished with 16 points. Heatley was the leading goal scorer in the series with 10, which included a hat trick in the series-deciding Game 6. Alfie’s five goals were good for second for Ottawa, but did lead the team in helpers with 10. The third and final member of “the Pizza Line,” Jason Spezza, was second with seven assists. The Senators only outscored the Flames 26-24 in the series, so that contributed to a lack of any impressive plus/minus ratings. Spezza at +3 was a team-high for Ottawa while Kelly was second with a +2. Goaltending was not strong for either team in this series. Starter Dominik Hasek posted a 4-2 record with a 3.67 goals against average and a .874 save percentage. Backup Ray Emery made two appearances in the series and allowed one goal on 21 shots against for a .952 save percentage.

Ottawa’s offense revolved around two guys, but the Flames’ offense revolved around four guys. Bob MacMillan led Atlanta in goal-scoring with seven goals, bested only by Heatley’s 10, and Darcy Rota was second behind MacMillan with five goals for the Flames. Guy Chouinard and Jean Pronovost were tied for the team lead in assists with seven while MacMilan was second with five helpers. In overall scoring for Atlanta, MacMillan and Chouinard were first and second with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Those two were also tied for the team lead in plus/minus at +4, which was also a series-high. Pronovost at +3 was right behind them for second on the team. Goaltender Dan Bouchard out-dueled his counterpart Hasek in terms of save percentage, but not on the scoreboard. To go along with his 2-2-2 record, Bouchard posted a 4.33 goals against average and a .899 save percentage. His backup, Reggie Lemelin, made one appearance in the series and stopped all 13 shots against.

The ’05-’06 Senators have now advanced out of the First Round in all three Ultimate NHL Playoffs. However, they’ve never made it out of the Second Round and they’ll have another tough matchup as they faceoff against the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers for the second straight UNP. Meanwhile, for the ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames, they made a surprising run to the Third Round in the inaugural UNP, they have failed to get out of the First Round in the last two UNP’s.

Next up in the First Round, the 31st-seeded ’06-’07 Nashville Predators take on the 34th-seeded ’34-’35 St. Louis Eagles!
